Inside the Role: Meet Ken, Senior Surveyor at Misura Geo

Name

Ling Yuk Yeung, Ken

Role at Misura Geospatial

Senior Land and Measured Building Surveyor

Each project is a new chapter

My role at Misura Geo involves carrying out a wide range of geospatial surveys, processing survey data and checking drawings produced by our CAD team. In my view, every survey task is unique – each project is a new chapter, with different details and challenges. There is always something to learn from every job, which is what makes my role so interesting.

Typically, I spend three to four days a week on site conducting surveys, with the remaining time at my desk focused on tasks such as data processing and drawing checks; accuracy takes time and is key in my role.

My experience extends to delivering various types of surveys, ranging from traditional topographical surveys using Total Stations and GNSS RTK, to laser scanning surveys using different types of laser scanners. More recently, we have started offering UAV photogrammetry surveys, which allow us to provide additional solutions and greater flexibility to our clients.

I started my career in Hong Kong

My career journey so far spans around five years. I started my career in Hong Kong after obtaining my bachelor’s degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. I worked for two contractor companies in Hong Kong until 2024, when I decided to move to the UK.

During this period, I obtained several professional qualifications, including becoming a professional member of RICS and the Hong Kong Institution of Building Information Modelling. Achieving these qualifications involved years of training, during which both my technical and ethical skills were developed. I am truly grateful to the seniors and mentors I met along the way for their guidance and support.

I enjoy exploring new technologies

I enjoy exploring new technologies that have the potential to save time and cost in surveying work. For example, I experimented with Microsoft Power Automate to create an automated workflow for processing comparisons between point cloud data and BIM models.

We really do cover a huge range of projects

What excites me about Misura Geo is the opportunity to be involved in survey projects of very different scales – we really do cover a huge range of projects. Being able to work across a variety of projects keeps the role interesting and helps me continuously develop my skills and experience.

Each project keeps me learning and improving

Each project brings new challenges, which keeps me learning and improving; it’s really satisfying being able to apply my skills to real-world situations and see my experience grow with every job.

I’m also genuinely impressed by the open and supportive culture within the company. Everyone is approachable and willing to help, which makes collaboration easy and enjoyable. This kind of environment really motivates me, keeping me engaged in my work.

My most memorable project

My most memorable project was a school survey in Orpington, which I was told might be the largest survey our company has ever undertaken. It took me around two weeks to complete the survey of the entire school – it was extremely satisfying once it was completed! The work took place during the summer and the good weather made it very enjoyable.

The school was surveyed using laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry, and we successfully delivered a highly accurate survey. The biggest challenge was ensuring data consistency and accuracy when handling point cloud data collected from two different survey methods.

My hobbies and interests

Outside of work is all about relaxing. Like most people, I enjoy watching movies and travelling in my free time. There are still so many places in the UK and Europe that I haven’t explored yet.

I enjoy music

I also enjoy playing the guitar – unfortunately, I left my guitar in Hong Kong, but I’m hoping to buy one again in the near future.

Words I live by

Work hard, play harder!
